Base ingredients
  • 1 cup water Serves as the base for the applesauce.
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice Brings a light, tangy flavor.
  • 1/2 cup honey Adds natural sweetness.
  • 1 tsp cinnamon Provides warmth and depth.
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg Adds cozy, spiced essence.
Apples
  • 7-8 cups apple chunks (peeled) Approximately 12-14 apples.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large heavy pot, combine 1 cup of water, 1/4 cup of lemon juice, 1/2 cup of honey, 1 tsp of cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp of nutmeg. Stir until well mixed.
  2. Peel, core, and cut the apples into chunks, mixing them into the pot to prevent browning.
Cooking
  1. Turn on the stove to medium heat. Cover the pot and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the apples have softened.
  2. Remove from heat and mash the apples into the juices as desired.
Canning
  1. For canning, spoon the mixture into five hot, scalded 1/2 pint containers, leaving 1/2 inch headroom. Process in a water bath for 15 minutes.
  2. Allow jars to cool before storing.

Notes

For richer flavor, consider adding a splash of vanilla extract or combining different apple varieties. Store applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
