For the Skillet
  • 1.5 tablespoons olive oil A rich and flavorful oil that adds a beautiful base to the dish.
  • 1 pound lean ground beef Juicy and tender, this protein is the cornerstone of the skillet.
  • 1 cup diced yellow onion Sweet and aromatic, onions bring a depth of flavor.
  • 2 cloves garlic (grated or minced) Pungent and flavorful, garlic adds an irresistible depth.
  • 0.5 head green cabbage (core removed and chopped) About 5 cups, adds a wonderful crunch.
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika Adds warmth and a unique dimension.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning A fragrant blend of herbs that elevates flavor.
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce Rich and tangy, provides moisture and silkiness.
  • 0.5 cup low sodium beef broth Ensures the dish stays moist while infusing flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar Adds brightness and balances the flavors.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds umami and richness.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large skillet, heat 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the lean ground beef. Break it up with a spatula while seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook until browned and fully cooked through. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked beef to a plate and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Toss in the diced yellow onion and grated garlic. Sauté for about a minute until they become fragrant and the onions turn translucent.
  3. Add the chopped green cabbage to the skillet. Sprinkle in the smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together thoroughly. Cook the cabbage for approximately 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally until it’s tender but still has a bit of bite.
  4. After the cabbage is cooked, return the ground beef to the skillet. Pour in the tomato sauce, beef broth, balsamic vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine all the ingredients and allow everything to cook together for another 3-4 minutes.
  5. Before serving, taste the mixture and adjust seasoning with additional salt if needed. Serve over a bed of rice or egg noodles.

Notes

For added depth of flavor, consider browning the beef until it gets a nice crust. This dish is also freezer-friendly and can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.
