Ingredients

For the Coating
  • 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk) For a creamy base that enhances flavor and tenderness.
  • 1 large egg Adds richness and helps the coating adhere perfectly.
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour Creates a crispy exterior.
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch For an extra crunch in the coating.
  • 1 tablespoon pepper Infuses warmth and depth of flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Essential for seasoning meat and breading.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds aromatic complexity.
Main Ingredients
  • 2 pounds cube steak The star ingredient, providing flavor and tenderness.
  • 1 cup oil For frying, creating a golden-brown crispy exterior.

Method

Preparing the Coating
  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the whole milk (or buttermilk) and the egg until well-combined.
  2. In a separate shallow bowl or plate, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, pepper, salt, and garlic powder.
Dredging the Steak
  1. Dredge each cube steak into the flour mixture, coating completely on both sides.
  2. Transfer the coated steak to the milk and egg mixture, covering both sides before placing it back into the flour mixture for a second coating.
  3. Repeat this process with all remaining steaks, ensuring they are well-coated.
Cooking the Steak
  1. In a large frying pan, heat the oil over medium to medium-high heat.
  2. Carefully add the breaded steaks to the skillet without overcrowding. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and thoroughly cooked.
  3. Once cooked, place the steaks on a serving plate and continue the frying process until all steaks are done.
Serving
  1. Serve the Chicken Fried Steak immediately with a generous drizzle of white gravy.

Notes

Ensure the oil is hot enough for perfect crispiness. Use buttermilk for a tangy flavor that complements the richness. Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra kick.
